The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District and its contractor Freyssinet, Inc. are winding up work on the St. Georges Bridge.

The bridge crosses the C&D Canal.

Work includes replacement of 45 floor beam covers and more than 7,000 bolts and rivets on the underside of the structure, and replacement of all deck joint strip seals.

Work is expected to be completed around the end of January. Motorists are advised to use the  William V. Roth, Jr. (Route 1) Bridge as a detour route.

The St. Georges bridge is adjacent to the Roth Bridge. The closing  has resulted in longer commutes for residents who have to travel on and off Route 1 to avoid tolls.

Also in the mix is the Route 301 toll road, which will connect to Route 1. The route is expected to reduce truck traffic and back-ups in Middletown while moving more truck traffic to Route 1.
