The chain has branded itself in its advertising as a judgment-free fitness center that does not cater to fitness fanatics.

Planet Fitness and other health club chains have been snapping up space  formerly occupied by big box stores. The chain earlier took over a portion of a former Best Buy store in the Marshallton-Prices Corner area west of Wilmington.

Barebones grocery chain Aldi also took part of the building.

To the west, Planet Fitness rival LA Fitness took a portion of a former Lowe’s store in Bear.  The LA fitness location features a swimming pool, making the chain a competor to the Bear-Glasgow YMCA.

Edge Fitness will open a location at the Christiana Fashion Center near the mall. The 18-unit chain features a cinema section where you can ride a bike or walk on a treadmill while watching a movie.

The newest Planet Fitness will occupy a portion of the former Pathmark store at the shopping center.

The once-popular store closed as parent A&P downsized and went out of business. Acme bought some Pathmark locations, but not the New Castle site. The Farmers area is now down to one supermarket, a Sav-A-Lot.
