Republican State Auditor candidate James Spadola accepted a position in the State Auditor a few weeks before the election.
Auditor Tom Wagner cited upcoming kidney transplant surgery as the reason for the decision. Wagner, also a Republican, is not seeking another term, citing health issues.
Democratic Party officials criticized the move. Spadola is facing off against Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Kathy McGuiness in the race for the post.
