A “blue collar” work ethic has become a popular narrative in the Delaware Valley, thanks to  Super Bowl and World Series victories by sports teams and the success of the Rocky movie franchise.

But Pennsylvania and neighboring Delaware rank in the middle of the pack or worse  as the “hardest working states.” To see rankings, click on a state on  the  map below:

Delaware came in at No. 22, with Pennsylvania in 42ndplace. Neighboring Maryland was listed as a harder working state, coming in at No. 12.

Factors ranged from average workweek hours to share of workers with multiple jobs to annual volunteer hours per resident.

Delaware had a higher ranking on indirect work factors, such as commute times and people with more than one job,  but had a lower ranking on direct factors – average work week and employment.

Alaska was ranked as the hardest working state, with a long average workweek. Another oil-rich state, North Dakota, ranked second.

Ranking at the bottom were West Virginia, Rhode Island and Michigan at 48th through 50th respectively.
