DeMatteis nominated for UD trustee post after Grant bows out

Lawyer, executive and political veteran Claire DeMatteis was nominated by Gov. John Carney serve as a member of the University of Delaware Board of Trustees.

 “From her time serving as a top aide to then-Senator Joe Biden to her extensive private sector experience, Claire has demonstrated sound judgment and leadership and has earned the respect of Delawareans up and down our state. Claire is a University of Delaware graduate and active alumna whose experience will serve the university’s students and its Board of Trustees as well. I look forward to the Delaware Senate considering Claire’s nomination,” Carney stated.

From 2013-2016, DeMatteis worked as general counsel and senior vice president at Affinity Health Plan Inc., where she was responsible for all legal, regulatory and compliance matters for the $1.4 billion corporation. She held a similar role as executive vice president, general counsel, and chief privacy officer for Catalina Marketing Corporation, a digital media marketing company.

Previously, DeMatteis spent four years at Stradley, Ronon, Stevens & Young,  a  law firm with offices in Wilmington.  She was partner in charge of the firm’s Delaware office from 2007-2008.

She worked for a decade as senior counsel for then-Senator Joe Biden, from 1994-2004, DeMatteis served as a member of a senior team on issues involving law enforcement, foreign policy, and constitutional matters. She helped guide campaign strategy, managed constituent communications and drafted legislation.

Most recently, DeMatteis has served as Special Assistant to Governor Carney helping Commissioner Perry Phelps spearhead reforms at the Delaware Department of Correction.

The  nomination  of  DeMatteis came after prominent lawyer and major UD donor Stuart Grant withdrew his name from consideration. Grant has been under fire from a former partner in his law firm of Grant and Eisenhofer over allegations of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment at the law firm. 

 As partner in Grant and Eisenhofer, Grant made a fortune in handling lawsuits involving disgruntled shareholders over mergers and disclosure of information that affected share prices. (See story below).
