Government and University of Delaware officials will be on hand for a groundbreaking ceremony today for the Newark Transportation Center.
The new rail station will be built at the site of the existing SEPTA and Amtrak rail station west of Route 896.
This federally funded project won a $10 million TIGER Grant and will create a multi-modal, wheelchair-accessible station for Amtrak and SEPTA passengers.
The project is also a key the growth of the adjacent UD STAR campus, which replaced the Chrysler plant.
Amtrak makes a limited number of stops a day at the station, with SEPTA operating service to and from Philadelphia during the work week.
