Last month, the Town of Smyrna lowered electric rates for all their customers by an average of 5.4 percent.

The rate decrease for commercial and industrial customers is 4.9% and 6.6%, respectively.

The cost reduction was made possible by  the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (DEMEC) reducing   its  costs to the town.

DEMEC  supplies the Town of Smyrna with a variety of services which include the sale of electricity. DEMEC is realizing lower costs to serve its members as a result of a diverse power portfolio consisting of lower cost energy contracts and highly efficient generation, a release stated.

Current market conditions and lower-cost natural gas are also contributing to reduced energy costs.

“Being a member of DEMEC means having the ability to gain the savings of economies of scale by joint generation ownership and joint energy purchases,” stated Gary Stulir, Town Manager, “The Town is extremely pleased to be able to pass these savings on to our customers while maintaining dependable electric service.”
