Delaware’s NBA G-League team will get a new name when it moves into a new arena on  Wilmington’s Riverfront.

The team rolled out the Blue Coats name in an introductory video released on its website. (See above).

The Blue Coats will replace the Delaware 87ers name.

The 87ers  were named in honor of the state being the first of the original 13 to sign the U.S. Constitution. Delaware is often known as the First State.

The new name reflects the uniforms of Delaware troops in the Revolutionary War. The troops also gained the name Blue Hens for their fighting chickens.

The name and blue color scheme were adopted by the University of Delaware for its athletic teams and logos. The blue color scheme is also featured in Delaware’s flag.

The Philadelphia 76ers affiliate will have a new logo, with a small area containing the 76ers brand.

The team has been playing at the Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware since its founding.

The team from Utah was acquired by the Philadelphia 76ers and moved to Delaware in 2013.
