Delaware would border on two congressional districts, rather than one, under a congressional redistricting map that was drawn by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

The new map came after a lawsuit charging that the oddly shaped districts amounted to gerrymandering. A district in the previous map completely surrounded the Delaware line and included narrow corridors to other parts of the district.

Critics claimed the configuration in affluent areas north of the state line were aimed at ensuring GOP control. The area is home to current management and retirees of Delaware companies like DuPont and its many banks. Pennsylvania has a dozen congressional districts that could figure into Democratic efforts to retake the U.S. House.

WHYY reported that some observers believe the new map favors Democrats.

Justices gave the Democratic administration of Gov. Tom Wolff and Republican legislators a tight deadline on redrawing a new map. Then that did not happen, the court stepped in to draw its own map.

Republicans have also sought to end the high court’s role in redistricting with an unsuccessful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
