Flaring in the United Kingdom

The Delaware City Refinery reported its second flaring incident in a week.

At 12:35 a.m., the incident led to the release of more than 100 pounds of sulfur dioxide at the PBF Energy site.

This chemical or substance is considered to be hazardous by the EPA.

This incident is currently under investigation by DNREC.

A release from the Delaware Department of Natural  Resources and Environmental Control indicated that excessive pressure in a line led to the flaring and release of sulfur dioxide.

Flaring, which produces a flame,  is used to relieve pressure in the high-pressure refining process.

DNREC reported the situation is now stable.

PBF does not discuss discharges unless the incident produces a prolonged outage that affects financial results of the publicly traded company.

Refinery outages can influence gas prices on the East Coast.
