The Delaware SPCA will re-open its Stanton site for services, such as pet vaccinations.
The organization will continue to operate a shelter in Georgetown,, but will not reopen a shelter in Stanton.
The announcement was made on the Facebook page of a group working to save the shelter site, with the News Journal following up with a story on the issue.
The closing last spring had been mired in controversy, with plans to sell the potentially valuable piece of real estate near Delaware Park.
A sticking point was a pet cemetery at the site. One and perhaps more pet owners had their ashes buried alongside the remains of their pets. The SPCA said owners could exhume their pets, leading to a futile effort by police to retrieve a fallen K9, the News Journal reported.
The announcement that the SPCA would reopen the site came during a volunteer clean-up of the cemetery.
The SPCA dates back to the 1870s. However, its shelter had seen alternatives spring up over the years in northern Delaware including Faithful Friends and the Delaware Humane Society in Wilmington.
