DNREC’s Division of Waste & Hazardous Substances will hold three public workshops next month across the state to introduce draft Universal Recycling Regulations for Delaware.
The informal workshops will be held in each county, offering the public an opportunity to have the draft regulations explained and to hear about the purposes behind the new regulations, as well as discussing current issues related to universal recycling compliance.

Delaware is falling short of its goals for recycling after the passage of a law that gave households the option of having recycling service. A recent story in the News Journal outlined a lack of compliance in Rehoboth Beach.
Locations and days are below;
- New Castle County – Tuesday, Sept. 6, Bear Library, 101 Governor’s Place, Bear, DE 19701
- Sussex County – Wednesday, Sept. 7, DNREC Lewes Field Office, 901 Pilottown Road, Lewes, DEC 19958
- Kent County – Wednesday, Sept. 14, DNREC Auditorium, Richardson & Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway SW, Dover DE 19901.
All workshops will be held from 3 – 4:30 p.m.
The purpose of the proposed regulations is to ensure that collection services for recyclable materials are consistent with the law; that collected recyclable materials are not landfilled or incinerated; that recyclable materials are properly processed and enter the marketplace; that recycling in Delaware can be effectively measured; and that waste diversion is maximized through the reduction of solid waste deposited in the state’s landfills.
DNREC encourages all interested parties to attend, including waste service providers, property managers, and the commercial sector.
