Williams also  issued the following statement:

“We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy, and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the young girl’s family and friends as they grieve this terrible loss. Howard High School of Technology has a rich history in the City of Wilmington, and in this time of great tragedy, it is critical that we embrace the students, parents, faculty, and the entire Howard community.”

“Our entire city is shaken by the loss of this child’s life, but in this moment we should all come together to work collectively to address the serious needs of our youth. I am heartbroken by this morning’s death of a young Howard High School student. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and with the students and staff at the school. State agencies will provide all the resources necessary to ensure that those affected by this senseless tragedy receive the support, grief counseling, and other services they need over these next hours and days.

Wilmington City Council President  Theo Gregory  issued the following:

“On behalf of all Members of Wilmington City Council, I express our condolences, support and prayers to the family of the child who died today as her family and friends grieve her passing. Council also extends its condolences and support to the school administration at Howard, and to the faculty and students as they stay strong and prayer together to overcome their hurt and grief. This is a difficult situation for everyone. These are the types of incidents that we pray won’t happen, but tragically they do and we find ourselves in a position to help and support each other as we try to learn from what happened. Council offers its support to the family and to the school during this period of mourning and healing.”

City Council member and mayoral candidate Kevin Kelley  offered  the following:

“A terrible tragedy took place this morning. A student at Howard High School was killed when several other students attacked her in the bathroom. I can’t begin to express how broken hearted I am, and I am sure you all are as well upon hearing this news. Now is the time for us to all put away our differences, and come together in support of the family and students.  On a personal note, I know the family very well and I am going to see how I can console them.”
