miller_justin_1Justin M. Miller, the former Associate General Counsel and Chief Litigation Counsel at DuPont Co., has joined Ballard Spahr as of counsel, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced.

Miller  brings nearly two decades of experience at a global, Fortune 100 corporation to a range of areas at Ballard Spahr, including litigation, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, securities law, and corporate governance. Miller will be resident in the firm’s Delaware office.

“Justin’s position at DuPont has given him a depth of knowledge about complex litigation that is hard to match,” Stewart said. “Justin understands not only the intricacies of high-profile litigation, but also how such litigation impacts companies, from the individual businesses to the board room. Having advised all of the levels within a company, Justin has a unique perspective and skill set, which we will rely on in serving clients in major litigation matters.”

Miller began at DuPont as Senior Counsel managing antitrust, commercial, and mass tort litigations.  He was promoted to Associate General Counsel and Chief Counsel of Litigation for DuPont’s multi-million dollar pharmaceutical subsidiary, where he guided the strategic and financial management of worldwide litigation.

In fewer than three years, the group led by Mr. Miller resolved numerous class actions, FTC investigations, and legislative and regulatory proceedings in 26 states, clearing the way for the profitable sale of the business, a release from the law firm stated.

Over the next decade,  Miller served as lead commercial counsel to multiple DuPont business units. He then served as Assistant Chief Intellectual Property Counsel and, later became Associate General Counsel and Chief Litigation Counsel for all of DuPont.

“Justin is one of the most gifted lawyers I have ever known and had the pleasure of working with at DuPont,” said Partner Tom Sager, the former General Counsel at DuPont Co. who joined Ballard Spahr last year. “He is one of the top three lawyers I have encountered in terms of vision, creativity, and business acumen. We are extremely fortunate to have him join us at this point in his career. He truly is a stellar performer.”

At DuPont,  Miller was  lead litigation counsel to a corporate M&A core team in divestitures and acquisitions of public companies worth billions of dollars. He has managed complex commercial and class action litigation, including civil and criminal antitrust, intellectual property, biotechnology, and consumer fraud class actions.

Miller directed all aspects of DuPont’s intellectual property litigation, including complex, international, and multi-jurisdictional disputes. He also coordinated global intellectual property risk assessment and financial modeling for litigation, licensing, and other enforcement decisions.
