$10 million makeover for former Alico building in downtown Wilmington

Renovation work is nearing completion on Courthouse Square, the former Alico building .

The 160,000-square-foot  building on King Street in downtown Wilmington is the longtime home of an insurance company that is now part of Met Life. Met Life continues to lease space in the building. About 110, 500 square feet is available.

Met Life  acquired  the life insurer and long-time Wilmington employer,  which fell victim to the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009. The company  still owns of the building and is paying for the makeover.

“Courthouse Square is being renovated to attract companies looking for a location next to the New Castle County Courthouse and within close proximity to the Amtrak  Station,” said  John Kaczowka  senior vice president CBRE,  leasing agent for the building. “When completed it will have many amenities including a large conference center on the 10th floor with dramatic views of the city of Wilmington, a fitness center on the lobby level and a café with outdoor seating.”

Architect is Tevebaugh Associates of Wilmington The contractor is Wohlsen Construction, which has an office in New Castle.

The Courthouse Square reflects the building’s location near the New Castle County Courthouse, home of Chancery and other courts.

The building comes with access to city-owned parking  structures  an advantage in the auto-driven downtown Wilmington market.

The 10-story high rise is also near the Double Tree hotel and the Lower Market Street area, which is seeing a continued turnaround. Kaczowka listed the following upgrades that are part of the $10 million project.

– New lobby that includes  a two story glass atrium that will be added to the front of the building.

– All new elevators including all new mechanical components.  New elevator cab finishes.

–  Complete overall of the heating and air conditioning system

– Exterior façade upgrades.  You can see new panels are being added to replace old panels.

– Exterior Plaza area will receive upgrades in landscaping.  Exterior seating will be added along the side of the building.

– All new elevator lobbies throughout the building.

– A conference center will be added on the top floor of the building.

Regus opens new office center

Regus,  has opened a new center in Newark located at 200 Continental Drive within the Christiana Corporate Center.
