WSFSA ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for  Thursday for Market Street Village in downtown Wilmington.

The project will feature 76 apartments in buildings  on the 800 block of Market Street.

The project is expected to provide a boost to the north end of Market Street, which has not seen as much redevelopment as the LOMA (lower Market Street) area.

Market Street Village would come with apartments at below market rates for teachers.

The ground breaking follows the publication of a The New York Times story on downtown development that outlined a number of projects in the works.

A link to the Times  story was released in a press release from the City of Wilmington and in an email announcement of the ground breaking from developer Buccini/Pollin Group.

Buccini/Pollin has a number of projects under way along Market Street that were outlined in the  Times story.

In the local media, the projects have been overshadowed locally by news about the city’s homicide rate, which has taken place in neighborhoods outside downtown.

Government and business  leaders are worried that coverage of the homicide rate might delay further development in the city and efforts to bring 5,000 new residents to the city.
