The National Association of Business Owners Delaware  held a Synergy + Networking Event last week.

Keynote speaker was Jen Groover, a motivational speaker and serial entrepreneur who has been founded businesses in areas ranging from educational software handbags and fitness services.

Groover told those in attendance that branding   requires authenticity and an ability to not hold back on communicating one’s story.

She noted that a vast gap remains between the ability of women to start businesses and the amount of wealth they actually control.

She went  on to tell the story of her sometimes troubled childhood, including pressure from her father who told her “failure is not an option.”

Groover said she later learned was that failure is actually a lesson to learn. .

The event was held at the home Fred and Louise Dawson. Dawson has long been a supporter of women’s causes including entrepreneurship.

Dawson, a wealth manager, said his work is inspired by his mother who worked on the assembly line at the Newark Chrysler plant at a time when that was frowned on by many.

Dawson also provided entertainment during the evening from his band, Club Phred.

Over the years, the band has raised $2.5 million, with a substantial amount of that money going to women’s causes.

Candace Roseo and her group from Bella Vista Trattoria & Pizzeria provided catering services.

In attendance was the winning team of the Global Start Up Challenge in Delaware. (See related story).
