Wilmington Police arrest man accused of attempting to run over officer during traffic stop

Two convicted felons were arrested with a handgun after one of the occupants attempted to hit an officer with a vehicle during a traffic stop.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:19 pm Tuesday  when Detective Joran Merced and Patrolman William Ball saw a vehicle traveling the wrong way in the 200 block of  north.Walnut Street. The officers  stopped the vehicle  and made contact with the driver  Jamere Porter, and his passenger, Justin Coleman. As the officers interviewed Porter, he put the vehicle into motion and attempted to strike  Ball. The officer was able to step out of the way and remove Porter from the vehicle. Porter and Coleman were taken into custody.

Cpl. Erik Meese and his K-9 partner Rex,  conducted a sniff test of the vehicle . Officers then executed a search warrant on the vehicle. Found was  Tec-9 semi-automatic handgun loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition and located one  gram of marijuana. The gun, which is no longer made, was seen many years ago on the Miami Vice TV show and at one time was listed as an assault weapon.

Porter is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a felony conviction in Pennsylvania. He was taken  to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $16,000 cash bail and a $500 secured bond.
