As announced earlier, Frontier Airlines has added a fee for a carry-on bag for customers paying the lowest fare and who do not book their flights on its websites.

Frontier offers 10 weekly flights from New Castle Airport (Wilmington-Philadelphia ILG).

The $25 fee becomes effective for tickets purchased on or after Aug. 6. The charge also includes third party websites such as Expedia or Travelocity. Customers paying higher priced economic and classic fares will not be charged.

Tickets booked at FlyFrontier.com will continue to receive a free carry-on bag. A carry-on bag can be no larger than 24” x 16” x 10” in dimension, including wheels and handles. That standard includes most roller-board style carry-on bags. The change is intended to create more space in the over head bins for Frontier’s most loyal customers, according to a release.

Frontier will continue to offer all customers to carry one free personal item, no more than 18” x 14” x 8”, on the aircraft, provided such item fits under the seat. A list of other items that are exempt from the carry-on bag fee can be found at FlyFrontier.com.

“Frontier continues to make it easier for customers flying with Frontier to pay only for the services they use, which allows us to continue lowering fares,” said David Siegel, Frontier’s CEO.

A nonbinding agreement has been reached calling for Frontier to be sold to an unidentified investor.

Speculation has centered around Indigo, an investment firm that recently began to sever ties with Spirit Airlines.

Frontier has been taking on the low fare practices of Spirit that include charging for all beverages. However, Frontier has not adopted Spirit’s practice of charging for carry on bags, regardless of where the fare is booked.
