Delaware Hospice announced that on August 26th, its Wilmington area office will move from Silverside Road to 16 Polly Drummond Center in Pike Creek, Newark. The new location will allow administration and home care staff to be located directly across the street from the site of the future Delaware Hospice Center.

The proposed 55,000 sq. ft. center will be a residential center, where patients who require a higher level symptom management can be cared for in a home-like setting.  It will offer an option to patients in need of end-of-life care who are unable to be cared for at home.

Delaware Hospice’s President and CEO, Susan Lloyd, said, “We are looking forward to continuing to serve patients and families from our new location.  For 31 years, Delaware Hospice has built its reputation for excellence as a hospice provider, adhering to our mission focused on meeting the needs of the community.” Hospice includes a physician, nurse, social worker, chaplain, and nursing aide, who provide care to patients and family members in their homes.  Delaware Hospice has developed programs beyond typical hospice care including New Hope for grieving children, Transitions for seriously-ill individuals, and Family Support Services’ extended bereavement activities.

“As the healthcare environment continues to evolve, the creation of the Delaware Hospice Center in Newark will have a significant impact,” Lloyd says. The thrust of health care reform to save Medicare and Medicaid dollars by keeping patients out of the hospital will require more care in homes and facilities.  The center will enable Delaware Hospice to provide its continuum of care and comprehensive range of hospice and palliative services in New Castle County, as it now does through our center in Milford.”

The first Delaware Hospice Center opened its doors in April of 2008 in Milford and has served nearly 4,000 patients and families to date.
