The Delaware Department of Transportation is holding a meeting to discuss a traffic-snarling replacement of a railroad crossing on U.S. 40 just east of Route 72 in Bear.
The construction will be done in conjunction with Norfolk Southern Railway. Safety improvements are required to provide a smooth crossing, correct drainage issues and add sidewalks that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to a release from DelDOT.
Rail traffic in the area has increased with the opening of a new rail unloading terminal by the Delaware City Refinery. Over the years, plans have been in the works for an overpass at the crossing, but due to budget issues, those proposals were shelved.
The work will require the closing of Route 40 at the crossing in a busy area that is near the intersection of Route 72 and the Fox Run Shopping Center.
The scheduled dates of closure are Friday night, August 9, to Monday morning, August 26. Dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions and other factors. Regional and local detours will be in effect. Detours and other measures to mitigate traffic will be presented at the meeting.
The meeting will be held on July 9 at the Oberle Elementary School from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Interested persons are invited to attend to discuss the project and detours. Comments will be received during the meeting or can be mailed to DelDOT Public Relations, P.O. Box 778, Dover, DE 19903 or sent via email to dotpr@state.de.us.
