Fire damages home near Newark

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating  a  fire near Newark  that heavily damaged a house.

The blaze, reported shortly at 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, took place in the 1500 block of Iron Hill Road near the top of Iron Hill. . The Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Company arrived on the scene with flames shooting out of the roof.

State fire investigators are currently searching for the origin and cause of this fire. One firefighter was taken to the Christiana Hospital – Emergency Room for heat related symptoms.

Fire damage was estimated at $275,000. The home was equipped with operating smoke alarms.

 Aetna spokesman John H. Farrell, IV, reported that 75  firefighters and EMS personnel from eight  New Castle and Cecil County  fire departments fought the blaze.  Crews had to be rotated as night  temperatures were  in the mid 80s, with high humidity.
Three dogs and one cat were rescued by firefighters from the home.  There were no civilian injuries, Farrell said. Crews remained on the scene well past midnight.
