An Elkton man was killed in a crash Wednesday night on I-495.

Maurice Dawkins, 22, of Townsend, drove a 1998 Mazda 626 south on I-495 in the center lane, north of the exit for Edgemoor Road. State troopers said the vehicle moved from the center lane to the right lane. The rear of the Mazda struck the front of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which was traveling in the right lane.

The collision caused both vehicles to leave the west edge of the roadway and travel down an embankment. The Chevrolet was rolling over and stopped once it struck a tree. The Mazda remained upright and came to rest at the bottom of the embankment.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 51-year-old male from Elkton, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dawkins and his passenger, Tyrique Fleming, 21, of Newark, were uninjured. The occupants of both vehicles were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Traffic was affected approximately three hours as Troopers investigated and cleared the crash. I-495 was closed for a time with traffic rerouted to I-95.
