Wilmington, Amtrak and the state Department of Motor Vehicles launched an enforcement initiative covering taxi operations in the city.
In recent weeks officers assigned to Wilmington’s Downtown and Riverfront Initiative received numerous complaints about unfair fare practices, possible licensing issues, and disorderly conduct by cab drivers.
On June 12, Wilmington officers, working in cooperation with the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles and Amtrak police, held a joint operation to inspect taxis.
The operation included 100 and 200 blocks of West 11th Street and the taxi stand on Rosa Parks Drive between South Market and French streets.
The effort found an illegally taxi that was towed as well as two licensed taxis that were cited for equipment, registration, and insurance violations.
Seven traffic summons were issued for violations including license, registration, endorsements, and equipment. Three taxis were also issued parking tickets. One driver was arrested for disorderly conduct after he became irate and disorderly as his taxi was towed.
In addition, the DMV suspended operations of four taxi companies, Nadal Taxi, Newark Express, International Transit, and Beolla (T/A Reliable Taxi) for violations of Federal regulations, license violations, and failure to have endorsed drivers.
The DMV later reinstated the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for Newark Express and International Transit, allowing the companies to resume operations.
Wilmington Department of Police and the DMV will continue to monitor the taxi companies, according to a release announcing the actions.
