One man killed, another critically injured in Saturday crash (release)

Newark-The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a two vehicle collision in which one person died and one critically injured earlier this evening on Old Baltimore Pike and Salem Woods Drive, Newark.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the incident occurred on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at approximately 3:15 p.m. as Charles E. Thompson-37 of Newark, DE was operating a 1990 Lexus LS400 traveling westbound on Old Baltimore Pike approaching the intersection of Salem Wood Drive. The Lexus turned left directly in front of an eastbound 2005 Ford F350 pickup operated by Michael Summers-46 of Elkton, MD. The front of the Ford F350 struck the right front corner of the Lexus within the intersection. After the impact The Ford rotated in a clockwise direction, coming to rest on Salem Woods Drive. The Lexus rotated in a counterclockwise direction and traveled off of the southeast corner of the intersection striking a wooden fence.

Charles E. Thompson was found unresponsive with no pulse with CPR initiated by Troopers and bystanders at the scene. He was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead. The front seat passenger Braden Boyer was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was admitted in critical but stable condition. Preliminary investigation indicated that both were not properly restrained.

Michael Summers was properly restrained and not injured as a result of the collision.

Old Baltimore Pike was closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash.
