The new nine-story tower at Wilmington Hospital was named in honor of donor and business leader Carol Ammon. A sign the naming of the tower was unveiled last week.

Ammon made a sizable contribution to the Wilmington Hospital expansion and renovation project and helped lead the fund-raising drive. The dollar amount of the donation was not disclosed.

Ammon led the spin-off of drug businesses from DuPont Co. and helped form Endo Pharmaceuticals. She served as CEO of the company and retired as CEO in 2005. Endo is a publicly traded company based just across the Delaware line in Chadds Ford, Pa.

Prior to heading Endo, she served as president of DuPont Merck’s U.S. Pharmaceutical Division. She is a member of the Board of Trustees at the Hagley Museum and Library and a member of Harvard’s Healthcare Advisory Board. On September 30, 2010, Ammon was inducted into the Delaware Business Leaders Hall of Fame. More recently she was named chairman of the advisory board for the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

In addition to her service as a member of the Board and a Trustee, Carol served as the first Honorary Chair of the annual Fund for Christiana Care effort in 2005 and as Honorary Chair of the Campaign for the Wilmington Campus from 2008 to 2013.

The John H. Ammon Medical Education Center at Christiana Hospital and the John H. Ammon Chair of Cardiology at Christiana Care are both named in honor of Carol’s father, as a result of Carol’s leadership and generosity, according to a Christiana Care release.
