60,000 people are expected to flock to Delaware’s state capital for the 2nd annual Firefly Festival starting today. That’s about twice the number of people that showed up for Firefly’s inaugural weekend last July. Full weekend passes for this year’s three-day music event have been sold out since mid-May, and a limited number of single day tickets have been selling at a brisk pace.

.“Single day tickets are still available, but we are nearing capacity,” says Lauren Shield, communication director for Red Frog Events, the company behind the Firefly Festival. “We’ve more than doubled [last years] capacity at this point.”Firefly officials are excited about the growth, and have made preparations for the rising numbers with more water stations and bathrooms. They’ve also adjusted for rising attendance by adding more attractions, and expanding others.

Those attending the event contributed to a reported 10-mile back-up on U.S. Route 13 Friday morning.

The event is expected to bolster the economy of the Dover area, which has been concerned about the loss of gaming revenue to neighboring states and NASCAR weekends that do not draw as many fans as in the past.  Firefly uses a  part of the Dover International Speedway complex, with the speedway getting some proceeds.
