Bowman to lead Small Business and Technology Development Center

J. Michael Bowman will succeed Clinton Tymes as State Director of the Delaware Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC).  Tymes will retire June 30th

Tymes and members of the office have been credited with helping to  create thousands of small business jobs in Delaware. The University of Delaware has  emerged as a key  player in  efforts to grow jobs in a state that is seeing a slow growth rate following the recession.

Bowman will take the post on Aug. 1.

Bowman will report to David S. Weir, director, University of Delaware, Office of Economic Innovation & Partnerships (OEIP).   He will also assume the new position of Associate Director of OEIP where, in addition to working as state director, he will also be responsible for the formation and leadership of an integrated small business economic development capability.

He will work to bring together and deploy statewide, the  strength of the small business center, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center and UD’s Technology Transfer Center. He will also establish a closer partnership with the Delaware Technology Park and UD’s Science Technology & Advanced Research (STAR) Campus.

Currently, Bowman serves as president of Delaware Technology Park. After a transition period, he will relinquish these positions and operational responsibilities  for the park.. Those duties will be assumed by the Economic Innovation office under a contract agreement between the technology park board and the university.

A new position, Assistant Director of Economic Innovation and Partnerships, will be established to manage the operations of the technology park. This position will report to Weir and receive direction from Andrew Lubin, director of real estate for UD. Lubin was appointed by Governor Markell to the board of the technology park.
