The  head of the Delaware Republican Party has abruptly resigned.John Sigler – who was re-elected to a new term as state party chairman in April – told party officials Wednesday morning he’s stepping down effective immediately.

The Associated Press reported the resignation was due to a need to attend to his business interests.

In a letter to the state party’s executive committee, Sigler cited “newly emergent and totally unexpected circumstances that are completely beyond my control” as the reason he is leaving.

”The party’s newly elected vice chair, Nelly Jordan, will take Sigler’s place until a special convention is held to elect a new party chairman.

Sigler, a former chairman of the National Rifle Association, worked to erase campaign debt and rebuild a party that has been bruised in recent elections. It has also been powerless in stopping a Democratic agenda that included passage of the same sex marriage bill.
