Newark's Quantum Leap demonstrates social media analyzer

A Newark company Wednesday demonstrated a web-based program that analyzes Twitter and Facebook traffic.

Quantum Leap Innovations’ Quantum Leap Buzz was rolled out in February and is now in use in 50 countries. Users also include large corporations such as IBM and Oracle.

Jay Askren of Quantum Leap introduced the technology Thursday at the second of three seminars of the Delaware Social Media Mashup.

The timing of the presentation was good, since it came after the first presidential debate.

Askren said former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s comment about liking Sesame Street character Big Bird, but promising to cut funding for public television produced millions of tweets.

Quantum Leap Buzz analyzed both people and content when it came to Big Bird postings.

Closer to home, Askren took a look at traffic for regional breakfast favorite,  scrapple.

To no one’s suprise, Quantum Leap Buzz found Twitter traffic centering on scrapple was centered in the Mid-Atlantic area.

The ability to drill down on social media traffic has many applications for businesses looking at trends, or checking on their reputation, Askren noted.

Holly Norton, Community Engagement Editor at the News Journal, which sponsord the Social Media Mashup, said Quantum Leap Buzz is an effective tool for journalists, thanks to its ability to compile and analyze tweets.

Quantum Leap Buzz is now available on the web at no charge. It is available for PCs and Macintosh computers.

Quantum Leap was founded by University of Delaware grads and produces tools used in analyzing data.

Clients include the Homeland Security and other government agencies along with Fortune 500 companies like DuPont or electric utility Exelon.

The company is based in the Delaware Technology Park in Newark. The park is affiliated with the University of Delaware.

Other sponsors of the mashup were Courtyard by Marriott and Ken Grant/Epic Marketing snd Courtyard by Marriott-University of Delaware.
