The Penn Cinema Riverfront, off I-95 in Wilmington,  announced it will open in mid-December.

“Construction has been a bit of an unexpected journey… There have been some ups and some downs but we’re excited to officially announce that Penn Cinema Riverfront will open December 14, 2012 for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the theater’s Facebook page reported.

The theater had originally planned to be open in early November with the latest James Bond movie.

The movie complex, which is being developed by Buccini/Pollin Group, will feature 14 full stadium seating auditoriums with  leather, high-backed seats—along with a full IMAX theater.

It will be one of the first in the country equipped with 48-frames-per-second projection systems to accommodate  films as Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.

Penn Cinema also operates a theater complex near Lancaster, Pa. with IMAX.

Also being built near the theater complex is a new hotel.

A short drive down I-95, Cinemark plans to build a theater complex next to Christiana Mall.  That theater complex is slated to open in 2014.
