Three daily newspapers in south Jersey will combine in November into a single daily newspaper publication named the South Jersey Time.

The papers, the Gloucester County Times, News of Cumberland County and Today’s Sunbeam, based in Salem, will have a combined circulation of 30,000, Owens said.

The papers are part of the Advance (Newhouse) chain that owns the Newark Star-Ledger.

The merging of the newspapers stops short of more radical steps taken by Advance in the South. The New Orleans Times Picayune and other dailies will see their publication schedules cut to three times a week, with major cuts in staffing. The publications will focus on websites and social media.

The New Jersey websites of the Advance papers have already been operating under the NJ.com URL for many years. Unlike many newspaper groups, Advance has chosen not to erect a “paywall” that allows a limited number of visits by non subscribers.

The family owned Advance papers have also not struggled with debt loads that have bedeviled other publishers, such as Trentonian owner Journal Register, which filed its second Chapter 11 case in the last few years.
