Matt Day says beer lovers are finding Twin Lakes Brewing Co., even though its new home is not open to the public.

It is not uncommon for a beer fan to walk in and the brewery does its best to welcome the traveler or travelers without an opportunity to taste some beer, according to Day, who is an owner of the brewery.

Days says the location just off Interstate 95 attracts travelers, even though the site is located within a busy business park.

Day and Twin Lakes are shooting for a mid-September opening that would produce a warmer welcome in the form of a   new tasting room and a connection to the brewery, which has been in production in recent weeks.

Last year, the brewery announced an end to tours at the Greenville site and later operations shut down while the move took place.

On Friday, Gov. Jack Markell stopped by to celebrate the opening of the brewery and taking one sip during a 9 am visit to the site. The ceremony attracted a number of media people as well as officials from the state and Newport.

Markell, who praised the growth of the craft brewing industry in Delaware, asked many questions about the business of brewing beer while touring the site.

The industry includes Milton-based Dogfish Head, one of the nation’s 20 largest craft brewers, as well as a number of other companies and brew pubs like Iron Hill. Twin Lakes employs five.

For nearly a decade, Twin Lakes brewed beer and even came up with a canning line at a scenic farm site near Greenville. However, the company outgrew the location, which came with other restrictions. Samuel Hobbs, whose family owned the farm, also ways with other owners.

Officials said Newport-based commercial real estate developer, Harvey Hanna and Associates stepped in and offered a site after learning that Twin Lakes was scouting the area and might even move out of state.

While lacking the scenic qualities of Chateau Country, the Newport location allows the company room for growth, brewery officials say.

Also praised were officials of Standard Distributing Co. of New Castle, the long-time wholesaler for Twin Lakes.
