Residents and property owners of Herring Creek Estates and several surrounding subdivisions near Angola have given their approval to a new public sewer system for their communities.
In a referendum held Saturday, voters favored the creation of a County owned and operated sewer system that will provide public wastewater service to the communities of Herring Creek Estates, Brandywood, Pinewater Farms and Winding Creek Village.
The area borders the inland bays, which have suffered from nutrient discharges from septic systems, polluted waterways and other sources.
Acting on a request from the communities, the Sussex County Engineering Department proposed the creation of the new sewer district, which would become an expansion to the Sussex County Unified Sewer District.
Unofficial results of the vote were 439 in favor of the district, with 272 against. The district’s creation awaits final approval of the Sussex County Council.
The County Engineering Department will begin designing the estimated $19 million system to serve the new district and its nearly 800 properties, said John J. Ashman, director of Utility Planning. Construction could begin by summer 2017 and be completed by fall 2019.
