Panda Express coming to Bear area

IMG_2272The nation’s largest Chinese fast food restaurant chain plans to open its second location in Delaware.

Site preparation is getting under way for a new Panada Express at a pad location off Route 40 in Glendale Plaza, across from Governor’s Square.

Panda Express, which got its start in a mall food court in Glendale, CA under the ownership of the Cherng family.

The chain 1,800  locations, mainly in the U.S. and annual sales of $2 billion.  Founders are said to be worth $2.6 billion, according to Forbes. 

Panda Express also has a location in Dover at 1125 N. DuPont Highway. There are also a handful of locations in the Baltimore and Philadelphia areas.

The Delaware State News reported other locations are planned in the Wilmington and New Castle areas. The Dover location reported a brisk business after opening its free-standing store that includes a drive-though window.

Like the nearby Chick ‘fil A in Bear, Panda Express got its start in mall food courts but has added free-standing locations.

Panda Express may be best known for its Orange Chicken entree.broadened its offerings,  It has also offered special promotions for holidays like Chinese New Year.

In 2015, the company held its first Family Day, which helped provide  10 million meals to Americans in need.

Like its Mexican food counterparts, Panda Express faces stiff competition from family-owned restaurants and carryout locations with low overhead costs.

In Bear-Glasgow, one establishment even carries the Panda name.

The contractor for the Bear location is Buffalo Construction Co., a Louisville, KY company that specializes in buildings for restaurant chains.

The Route 40 corridor is seeing more fast food restaurants, with a Popeyes slated to open shortly  near the Fox Run Shopping Center.
