A spokesperson for the San Francisco company confirmed that its lower-priced UberX ride-sharing system was in  operation in a sizable portion of the state. An Uber map indicates the service operates from the northern tip of the state to the Bear-Glasgow area. A blog entry also announced service to coastal areas.

There had been some confusion regarding the entry of the company, due to a State of Delaware release that noted the company would have to meet regulatory requirements and did not specify start dates.

Uber has been operating in a “gray area” in regard to  regulation, since it was being used by Delaware residents and visitors. The company had previously expanded operations to nearby Philadelphia and Ocean City, MD,

Earlier this  year, Uber and the administration of Gov. Jack Markell hammered out the  agreement that cleared the way for the company to operate in Delaware. Allowing Uber to operate is seen as essential in keeping the state “technology  friendly.” Northern Delaware is becoming a center for financial-related apps, from both start-ups and established banks, like Capital One.

Uber is a strikingly designed  smart phone or mobile device app that summons a contractor/driver for  the company  to pick up an individual or individuals.  A check of the application showed cars available in both Rehoboth and in  northern Delaware as of Tuesday.
