Delaware ranked ninth among the 50 states in job growth, according to a report from Arizona State University. The study took a look at November 2012 and November 2013 figures.

The No. 9 ranking was a vast improvement from the 40th-place ranking in November 2012, according to the report from the Carey Scool of Business at ASU.Ranking 50th was Alaska, with North Dakota and its oil-fueled economy in first place.

The state has struggled with job growth in recent years. Delaware has seen a drop in its unemployment rate in recent months, with a 6.5% rate in November after being above 7 percent since the recession year of 2009. At the same time, however, the size of the state’s workforce has shrunk.

Driving the performance was 7.75 percent job growth in the professional and business services sector in November 2013 compared to November 2012 with a gain of 4,500 jobs.

Ranking 50th was Alaska, with North Dakota in first place.

The performance came despite a 42nd place showing in the troubled manufacturing sector and 43rd in government employment. In both categories, Delaware showed job losses.
