Sussex sees more than 3 inches of rain from Ophelia

More than three inches of rain from Tropical Storm Ophelia fell on portions of Sussex County as of Sunday morning, the National Weather Service reported.

The storm caused coastal flooding and wind damge, leading to to the mobilization of the National Guard. However, the state appeared to escape a torrential downpour that would have forced major evaculations in low-lying areas.

Route 1 was closed for a time on the southern coastal edge of the state.

Volunteer weather observers reported Milton had the highest total at 3.5 inches. At the other end of the spectrum a Wilmington observer reported an inch and a half of rainfall.

The South Jersey coast got the most rain with a Egg Harbor observer reporting 4.5 inches.

The Nationall Weather Service noted that observers use various types of equipment in coming up with measurements. One person from Georgetown reported five inches of rain on social media. The Weather Service uses an airport gauge for reports from the Sussex countyseat.

The DEOS system from the University of Delaware and the Delaware Department of Transportation reported similar rainfall figures with winds in beach areas gusting to nearly 50 miles an hour.

Scattered rainfall is expected to continue on Sunday from the storm’s remnants.
