Delaware’s DMV is going the lottery route in its annual release of low-digit plates under a 12 Days of Plate-Mas promotion.
Gone will be the lines at DMV offices from those eager to get the plates that in Delaware are owned by the individual, not the DMV
The low-number tags are often a status symbol in Delaware, with a few sales in the six figures and more than $1,000 paid for higher numbers. A few small businesses go so far as to get their plates for their company vehicles.
Some Delawareans have taken to get their own black plates, regardless of the number. That has led to calls for stiffer penalties for those who go outside the current system.
Registration for the lottery begins Monday, October 31, at 8 a.m. and will continue every day through Sunday, Nov 13. Only one registration per driver’s license or ID card is allowed.
During the registration process, users have to specify which type of tag they want:
– PV – 5 Digit – Numbers Only (Under 10,000 lbs. registered vehicle weight)
– T – Trailer (regular trailers – utility, flat-bed or non-camping trailers)
– PC – Passenger Car (Under 10,000 lbs. registered vehicle weight)
– C – Commercial
– RT – Recreational Trailer (camping trailers 5,000 lbs. and over, not regular trailers – see above)
– MC – Motorcycle (above 55cc’s)
If you register to win a five-digit numbers only tag and your vehicle is under 10,000 pounds, using tag type PV is advised, given the larger number of available tags.
Anyone who enters will receive a confirmation e-mail with a lottery code.
Starting on Monday, November 14, 2022, at 9 a.m. through Thursday, December 1, 2022, the DMV will randomly select winners.
No drawings will be held on weekends or on November 24 2022 or November 25.. The final drawing will be held on December 1.
