A bill aimed at protecting the right to terminate a pregnancy is on its way to the governor’s desk.
Passage by the House and Senate on a largely party-line vote came after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, which overturned the 50-year-old Roe v Wade decision that upheld a women’s right to obtain an abortion.
HB 455 expands access to abortions and enhances protections for abortion providers and patients.
The legislation also comes after Texas passed a bill that allows an individual to sue anyone who assists in terminating a pregnancy.
The expansion also clears the way for practice registered nurses to perform abortions in alignment with their scope of practice for the purposes of terminating a pregnancy.
In the accompanying photo, U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester stopped by to congratulate the sponsors of the bill.
