Delaware continues to rank high as an affordable place to live. While most northeastern states rank among those with the highest property tax burdens, property taxes throughout Delaware remain among the lowest in the United States. Delaware is the sixth lowest, according to a 2021 report from WalletHub. The lower costs of homeownership result in 75% of the state’s households owning their own home.

Three-quarters of the state’s homeowners spend less than $2,000 a month on housing and about 85% of the state’s renters spend less than $1,500 a month on housing, according to Delaware Prosperity Partnership, which works to counter negative perceptions of the state’s tax climate, namely its high personal income tax and corporate tax rates.

Another plus is the lack of a sales tax in the state.

DPP is a private-public economic development agency.

DPP noted another strong point – a median income of $68,287, based on the American Community Survey collected by the U.S. Census Bureau.

“Since DPP began three years ago, we have closed 45 projects, which include businesses new to the Delaware market and Delaware-located businesses choosing to grow here,” said CEO Kurt Foreman. “Combined, these projects are expected to result in more than $1.39 billion in capital investment and nearly 5,000 new jobs in Delaware. These figures not only speak to the collaborative nature of the DPP model but also underscore Delaware’s can’t-be-beat value proposition, from excellence in education and health care, easy access to one of the best coastlines in the U.S., and one of the most affordable places in the country.”

Delaware, Maryland have the longest hospital wait times

New research has revealed the states with the longest hospital wait times, with Maryland coming out on the bottom and Delaware not far behind.

The research, carried out by IT service automation company SysAid studied data from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Maryland comes in first, with an average wait time of 228 minutes. Despite this news, Maryland is one of the only states to have a “global hospital budget”, where rates for medical procedures and hospital budgets are capped, a system that other states like Pennsylvania have adopted.

Delaware holds down second place, with an average hospital wait time of 195 minutes. Based on 2012 data, Delaware spent the lowest amount of its state budget on health care compared to neighboring states Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. On the plus side, 92% of its population ages 19 to 64 have healthcare coverage, five points higher than the national average.

SynAid noted that Covid-19 was a factor in the rankings.
