Covid update: 660 new cases, no new deaths

The Sunday summary from the Delaware Division of Public health reported no new deaths and 660 new cases as a fall-winter surge takes hold. Daily cases had been running below 200 earlier in the fall.

The rate of new cases is comparable to the period a year ago when no vaccines are available.

A day earlier, seven deaths were reported, all from a review of Vital Statistics reports from September-November.

Of those who died, five were residents of New Castle County and two from Kent County, who ranged from their 40s to their 80s. All had underlying health conditions and one individual was a resident of a long-term care facility. Four individuals were not vaccinated. The death toll from Covid complications rose to 2,218.

The other numbers

• 660 new positive cases, bringing the overall total to 160,768.
• 36.1% of people who tested positive in the 7-day rolling average (down three-tenths of a percent from the previous day) and 9.2% of total tests were positive in the 7-day rolling average (unchanged from the previous day.
• 318 current hospitalizations, down one from the previous day, including 27 individuals in critical condition.
• 18 new hospital admissions (the total has not yet been updated from the previous day).
• 970 people who tested negative, bringing the total to 751,295.
• 611,508 people fully vaccinated (up 54 from the previous day), according to the CDC Vaccine Tracker.
• 1,509,704 total vaccine doses administered, up 95 from the previous day), according to the CDC Vaccine Tracker.

In its weekly report, released Friday, the Delaware Division of Public Health noted that 87% of deaths came from unvaccinated individuals. (See below)
