Hobby Lobby will open its second Delaware store in University Plaza, south of Newark, and a short drive from Christiana Mall.

The privately-owned company based in Oklahoma City confirmed that a lease has been signed for a portion of the space now housing the Burlington store, with an estimated opening in early 2023.

Hobby Lobby operates more than 900 stores nationwide.

Work is underway on the space at the north end of the Burlington store, which is reducing its square footage.

University Plaza, an aging strip center has retained retailers, thanks to its location near the mall and I-95.

It will be the second Delaware store for Hobby Lobby, which opened its first location in Dover.

Hobby Lobby has become one of the largest craft store chains in the nation, with its main rival being Michaels, which has about 1,200 stores, including one near Christiana Mall.

The company is also known for paying $15 an hour to full-time employees and closing its stores on Sundays.
