Delaware recorded two new  deaths from Covid-19  early in the weekend as new cases and hospitalizations continued to climb.

The two  who died, a resident of Kent County and one of Sussex County, ranged in age from their 60s to their 80s. Their vaccination status was not immediately available. However, the bulk of deaths this summer have come from those who were not fully vaccinated.

Delaware has gone as long as a week with no new deaths, apparently due to more than 70% of adults getting at least one dose of vaccine.

As of Sunday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention percentage had risen to 73.6%.

A lower vaccination rate among young adults and the rise of the Delta variant are believed to be contributing to the soaring number of cases.

The state has taken note of rising case rates in a dozen zip codes, many in western Sussex County and including Harrington in Kent County. However, Hockessin, Elsmere, and Townsend in New Castle County also see an elected number of cases.

The other numbers as of Sunday  night

• 202 new positive cases, bringing the overall total to 112,967 or more than 11% of the state’s population.  The number of positive cases had dropped below 50 prior to the latest surge.
• 5.1% of total tests were positive in the seven-day rolling average, down one-tenth of a percent from the previous day. The total test measurement had fallen as low as 1%.
• 101 current hospitalizations, up 25 from the previous day, including eight individuals in critical condition. Hospitalizations had fallen below 25 earlier in the summer.
• 15 new hospital admissions, up four  from the previous day.
• 475,731 Delawareans fully vaccinated, up 416 from the previous day.
• 1,072,457 total vaccine doses administered, up 1,137 from the previous day.
