The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) announced eight additional fatalities related to coronavirus The daily update was based on data received as of 6 p.m. the previous day.

The death total for Sussex County is now nearing the figure for more heavily populated New Castle County.  Sussex also accounts for more coronavirus cases than New Castle County as work continues on dealing with an outbreak of cases tied to areas with poultry processing plants.

Residents of long-term care facilities account for a high percentage of total deaths in Delaware. Deaths among younger people with no pre-existing conditions have been relatively few.

Delaware ranks 13th  in deaths per 100,000 population among the 50 states and the District and Columbia. Ranking first was New York, with Wyoming having the lowest rate. The figures per 100,000 population are from Statistica.

The state had been preparing for a higher level of hospitalizations that can lead to a spike in deaths. At present, the number of people hospitalized has remained flat, with hosptials in all three of the state’s counties having ample capacity.
