The City of Rehoboth Beach  has temporarily removing benches city-wide.

The benches, mainly on the now-closed boardwalk are popular with visitors and residents.

“After careful consideration, this decision was made to ensure we are taking all steps possible to slow the spread of COVID-19. By removing access to benches that invite multiple touches and close personal contact, we are in a better position to combat the spread of coronavirus,” said Mayor Paul Kuhns.

The board, the home of many of the benches is closed as is the beach.

The beach and Boardwalk remain closed until May 15, or until the public health threat of COVID-19 has been eliminated under Governor Carney’s State of Emergency order.

Areas inland from Rehoboth Beach in Sussex County are seeing an outbreak of COVID-19, with large-scale testing taking place in the Georgetown area.

Gov. John Carney’s emergency order now requires the wearing of facemasks in public places.

Rehoboth Beach playgrounds are closed due to coronavirus. City parks remain open, although no team sports are allowed.
