Citizens Bank will close its 117 E. Main St. branch in  Newark, effective Feb. 26.

“Based on changing customer behaviors and our real estate strategy, occasionally we have to make the business decision to close a branch,” stated Rory Sheehan, vice president of Media Relations for Citizens Bank. “We value our customers and make every effort to transition them to the nearest local branch as seamlessly as possible, in addition to continuing to invest in our digital and mobile capabilities to allow them to easily bank with us in any location.”

Sheehan said customer accounts will be transferred to the Chestnut Hill Plaza branch at 40 Chestnut Hill Plaza,  which is approximately three miles away.”

The Citizens branch announcement comes as concern grows over business closings on Main Street. Retailers have become fewer, due to changing shopping patterns and a preference for locations near malls.

Main Street is also undergoing a major reconstruction project.
