Good afternoon everyone,
Word that Incyte plans to add to its campus just outside Wilmington adds to the string of wins for the state’s economy.
A while back, the publicly traded company had acquired an office building and a tire shop across from its headquarters in the former Wanamaker building on Augustine Cutoff.
All too often companies, especially those in volatile industries like biopharma , change plans and the acquired land sits vacant. To its credit, Incyte is moving forward, even though it had other options in the region.
No price tag has been listed for the project, which will be the topic of a community meeting later this month.
The news comes on top of a number of other construction projects underway or in the pipeline.
The biopharma industry remains a key part of the state’s economy, even after thousands of job cuts and the razing of lab space by AstraZeneca in the past decade.
Another positive development off I-95 is the construction of the headquarters of the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals on the University of Delaware STAR Campus.
The state, its congressional delegation and UD spearheaded efforts to land the two-year-old organization that deals with the complexities of making smaller amounts of customized drugs used in treating cancer and other diseases.
A short distance away, in the Bear-Glasgow area, Wilmington Pharmatech plans to add lab space and up to 139 jobs at former DuPont site.
After dealing with the possibility that the biopharma industry could disappear from northern Delaware, it now appears that good luck and heavy lifting by various constituencies is paying dividends.
Enjoy your day and I hope you got a chance to step outside to enjoy this early dose of spring.
