Updated: Stubborn fire extinguished early Monday at Delaware City refinery

A stubborn fire Sunday afternoon at PBF Energy’s Delaware City refinery was extinguished early Monday morning.

“The fire on the Delaware City Refinery crude unit was extinguished at 1 a.m. today. DNREC officials and refinery personnel monitored air quality during the incident, with zero readings throughout. A thorough investigation will be conducted into the cause of the incident,” according to a statement from owner PBF Energy.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources reported the release early Sunday night on its public notification system  and indicated that sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide  was released. 

The chemicals are a part of the refining process.

No injuries were reported  in the fire at the refinery south of New Castle. No estimate of damage was immediately available.
