The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating an explosion that occurred Sunday night south of New Castle near an apartment development.

Residents in the 500 block of South DuPont Highway reported an explosion around 11:30 p.m. near the Pine Valley Apartment complex. State fire investigators determined that an unoccupied motor vehicle was damaged as a result of some type of device exploding outside the vehicle.

A suspicious package was found on the scene. The New Castle County Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit went to the scene and made the package safe. The package was not a device, but items at the scene were collected as evidence.

The explosion was about four-tenths of a mile away from the scene of a fire caused by an incendiary device that caused heavy damage to a Dollar Tree store. An arrest was made in that case. Elsmere also saw a wave of cases of devices placed near homes. An arrest was also made in that case
